Running is like riding a bike

As a gift from Mother Nature, the temperatures last night were in the 50s. The day’s rain had ceased and the air was fresh. Although it was already dark, I decided I just had to take the dogs outside for a run.

And I’m sure glad I did.

It was around 8 pm and the Bay View neighborhood streets were quiet. I could smell dinners cooking inside some of the homes. See American Idol flashing on TV screens. And hear an 80s band rehearsing in somebody’s basement.

The dogs led, as they always do. But for the first time in a long time, I was keeping pace. I was in a gear somewhere between jogging and sprinting. More towards jogging, but still smoother than it’s been in months.

It could be my new running shoes. It could be that I needed to decompress after a series of long days. Or it could just be time for me to start running again.

Over the past few weeks, I was starting to worry that I would never feel like running ever again. Like the two half marathons I did last year were just a passing fad for me. Like that sport is reserved only for the die hards.

But now I feel like I want to go running again. Maybe even right now. Or maybe tomorrow before work. Maybe that little-known shoe manufacturer was on to something with their tagline after all. It turns out, when you “Just do it”, you do feel better.

And you always remember how it’s done.

  1. Welcome back to that feeling when running grabs hold and won’t let go. Any chance you could be enticed to run another half-marathon (maybe Napa to Sonoma)?
