(Re)solutions

Without the re, they’re just solutions. I don’t think they should be about do-overs. Start overs. Or I wish I wouldas. They should be about I am going tos. And, actually, in some definitions, “solution” is a synonym for “resolution.”

So why are they so often positioned as the need to do something better than last year? Why do so many of us insist on starting every year emotionally behind the eight ball?

By spending time dwelling on something that’s already history?

I read somewhere that, “The idea of admitting mistakes and finishing the business of the old year is found in many cultures.” I’m all for self improvement. And have done a lot of it over the past couple of years.

Typically, they don’t revolve around New Year’s resolutions. Usually, I’m more of a mid-summer goal setter. Or maybe someone who reflects on life around my birthday in the fall. But this year, I’m going to put a few worthwhile solutions into motion starting now.

Although they are too personal to post here, I will probably share some of them as time goes on. Just don’t mistake them for resolutions because the first thing on my list is to:

Stop looking back so much.
